INDEV student now Environment Students’ President

Friday, October 29, 2021

The Environment Students’ Society (ESS) is an undergraduate student association that aims to advocate, support, educate, and arrange events for all the students in the Faculty of Environment, across all environment programs and from all years.

International Development (INDEV) student, Nashmia Aamir, is the 2021/22 Environment Students’ Society President. Prior to becoming President, she was a shy individual -- so much so, that talking to a new person terrified her. Volunteering and getting involved in a student society was something she would never have thought she would or could do. It was the support from her peers in the INDEV program and other students within the Faculty, that helped her gain the confidence to run for the President position.

As a 4A student in the International Development undergraduate program, Nashmia has learned about effective leadership and how to think critically about world problems. This knowledge prepared her, as she is continually learning how to effectively and efficiently apply these skills to problems that may arise in her new role.

“As President of the Environment Students’ Society, I stand for racial equity, mental health, and inclusion for all members of our Faculty. I hope to create an inclusive, safe, and welcoming space for everyone in the Faculty of Environment. The last year and a half have been difficult for many people, so I hope to bring some normalcy back as we return to campus. I would like everyone to know that I am here – to listen and to take action.”
