On November 23, our team - Kabir, Aidan, Anmol, Arnav, Joanna, and Luka, five Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) students and one Mathematics/Financial Analysis and Risk Management student, represented the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) and University of Waterloo, at the Association of Canadian Intercollegiate Investment Clubs (ACIIC) fall Stock Pitch Competition.
This intercollegiate stock pitch competition brings together 10 of the biggest business programs in Canada including Western University, Queens University and University of British Columbia.
Our “buy” recommendation of Napco Securities Technology (NASDAQ NSSC) was supported by extensive phone calls with suppliers and in-depth business analyses that led our team to a first-place finish! We credit much of our success to extracurriculars at the University of Waterloo including Waterloo Private Capital, Waterloo Business Review and the educational sessions hosted by ACIIC themselves, which helped us refine our skills.
Reflecting on the experience, it was truly an incredible opportunity. Being able to represent UWaterloo alongside the biggest universities in Canada and meet like-minded people was truly an unforgettable experience. We had the chance to watch interesting presentations and learn about various industries like real estate software, shipping, small homes, and grocery. Additionally, we were able to apply a lot of skills we learned in our programs including valuation, research and presentation techniques.
Our advice to fellow SAF students is to maximize learning opportunities from on-campus extracurriculars such as Waterloo Private Capital which hosts many educational informative sessions about the finance industry and helps students develop their stock pitching skills. It is equally important to participate in as many competitions as possible so you can continue to practice while also receiving feedback from alumni and fellow students. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and we look forward to competing in more competitions in the future!
