Unique degree. Double threat graduates.
AFM’s integrative learning environment means accounting students build
strength in finance, and finance students build strength in accounting. This
combined depth with added business studies is a direct route to many
professional designations and leadership positions in your chosen career.
The integration of these 4 learning elements means that our students are gaining a learning experience that is unique and beyond the scope of what traditional business schools offer.
The SAF Learning Model
The AFM curriculum was developed and is continuously updated in consultation with employers and professional designation governing bodies to ensure that our students are gaining the skills and knowledge the profession and employers are looking for.
As an AFM student, your growth in becoming complete professional will begin with understanding core concepts, followed by applying your knowledge, and finally integrating it all through academic, co-op, and extra-curricular experiences.
Integration of accounting and finance
Accounting and finance are closely linked. Accounting is the analysis of an organization's past performance where as finance is the analysis of an organization's future performance.
With the AFM program, you'll develop the professional expertise to see the full picture - past, present, and future - of an organization's worth. You'll to be the go-to person who can effectively analyze, interpret, and communicate financial information and take a leadership role in the development of strategies and recommendations to support all areas within a business.
What sparked my interest in accounting and finance was knowing how important both are to the business world. Given the complexity of accounting, and the distance between investors/stakeholders and the corporate executives that make the decisions, it has become clear to me that accounting and finance are more than just numbers; they are about creating accountability and trust between two parties.

Tailored pathways to professional designations

Recognized in the marketplace, our students have unique opportunities that lead them faster and more directly to the CPA, CFA, CIA, ISP, and/or ITCP professional designations
The SAF was created because Waterloo’s culture and co-op system reinforced the belief that you won’t truly understand accounting or finance until you do it. The AFM program combines academic rigour with experiential opportunities through:
- case-based lectures
- workshops and events
- student clubs
- SAF Outreach and Ambassador Program (SOAP)
- Student-run Investment Fund
- extra- and co-curriculars
- paid co-op work experience
- AFM students navigate opportunities over 4 co-op work terms (total 16 months)
- see sample co-op jobs
