Welcome

The mission of the Secretariat is to provide professional support and guidance to University of Waterloo governing bodies, their committees and councils, and to senior University officers on all governance, policy and operational issues which might affect the institution.

The Secretariat also plays a significant role in the development, promulgation and interpretation of University of Waterloo policies and procedures, and supports the activities of senior search committees, as well as relations and grievance/appeal committees.

The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary of the University, who maintains close working relationships with the Chancellor and the Chair of the Board of Governors, as well as the President, Provost and other senior University officer, providing advice, guidance and support with respect to the execution of their responsibilities.

    On 25 October 2016, the Board of Governors approved new Policy 42 - Prevention and Response to Sexual Violence and on 2 December 2016 the Board of Governors approved the accompanying Sexual Violence Response Protocol and Procedures. For more information please see the most recent Policy Post.

    Associate University Secretary (Risk & Compliance) Alice Raynard has published an article in the Bulletin of the Association of Lawyers Outside Québec. This article provides a perspective on the potential role of lawyers with regards to enterprise risk management (ERM) as part of their clients’ business or of their own practice and how that role may add value to the legal advice provided by those lawyers.

    The Federation of Students has issued a call for nominations, including four upcoming vacancies for undergraduate student representatives on Senate. Note that a call for nominations for upcoming vacancies for faculty, graduate student, and alumni representatives will be issued in January 2017.
