The Secretariat & Office of General Counsel (SOGC) is responsible for supporting the University of Waterloo in its mission by providing guidance and professional legal support to University of Waterloo governing bodies, their committees and councils, and to senior University officers on all governance, policy and operational issues which might affect the institution.

    On 10 November 2016, University Secretary & General Counsel Logan Atkinson was a panelist at the HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 session on academic university governance. He shared the stage with William Watson (chair of the Board of Governors), Sandra Banks (Vice-President, University Relations), and Sally Gunz (president of the faculty association).  Logan briefly spoke to aspects of governance and leadership within an academic university setting and fielded questions on the relationship between collegial governance and governance understood in formal legal terms.
