FAQs for Work from Home for Employees

It is essential that employees speak with their manager prior to submitting a flexible work arrangement (FWA) application to ensure any supported FWA request meets the criteria outlined in the FWA guidelines.

How do I request a work from home arrangement?

FWA will be initiated, tracked, and approved in Workday.  There is a User Guide available to assist with the process.

Who approves my flexible work request?

Flexible work arrangements must be approved by your manager followed by the Executive Council Unit Head.

Executive Council members are listed here; it includes Deans.

How do I know if my flexible work request has been approved?

Once the FWA application is approved, you will receive a notification in Workday (bell icon).  You will also see it on your employee profile under the Job option (blue menu).

How do I renew my flexible work agreement?

There is a maximum of 12 months for Work from Home arrangements.  Speak with your manager before the expiry of your arrangement to discuss a new arrangement.  You will need to initiate a new request in Workday.  There is a User Guide available to assist with the process.

How long can I ask for a FWA  Arrangement?

There is a maximum of 12 months for Work from Home arrangements. 

Can my manager deny my flexible work request?

Flexible work arrangements are the sole decision of the Executive Council Unit Head, or delegate. Your manager will work with you to determine options for flexible work.

Can I change my flexible work request?

Should you wish to change your work from home arrangement, please end the current arrangement in Workday and submit a new request.

The Workday process only allows for a maximum of 12 months. What if I wish to have the arrangements go longer?

The 12-month maximum is to ensure that a discussion takes place as to the appropriateness of the arrangement for both parties. If you wish to continue the arrangement, then you need to submit a new request and obtain the appropriate approvals to continue with flexible work.

What if the arrangement is not working?

As this is a staff member-initiated request, the staff member can cancel the arrangement at any time and return to the university work site. FWA arrangements can be adjusted/terminated at the request of the employee or manager. There is a User Guide available to assist with the process.
