Graduating from university is a significant achievement. Culminating years of dedication and hard work, convocation is a time for celebration — looking back with pride and looking forward with hope.

This milestone is even more meaningful for Waterloo’s undergraduate valedictorians, who, for their social and academic contributions, have been chosen by their peers to represent them at their respective graduation ceremonies. Read about Kyle's Waterloo journey below.

Daniel Harley, professor at the Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business and Games Institute faculty member, co-authored “Playing by Ear: Designing for the Physical in a Sound-Based Virtual Reality Narrative” with Aneesh P. Tarun, Bonnie J. Stinson, Tudor Tibu, and Ali Mazalek.

Convocation is a time to celebrate a significant milestone. This year’s convocation celebrations may look a little different, but the role of the valedictorian remains the same — to represent the graduating class and address the students, families and supporters who will come together to recognize this important day. 

Valedictorians have been selected by their peers in recognition of their social and academic contributions to the Waterloo community. We are excited that Sim Purba, BGBDA '20 was selected for the Faculty of Arts.

Kiera McMaster, a recent graduate of the Global Business and Digital Arts program, is a recipient of this year's Arts Award for Excellence in Service. She’s been highly acknowledged and rewarded for her innovative, dedication and execution to the Resource Bins at University of Waterloo’s satellite campus in Stratford.

ALOHA From New York, GBDA Student Helps Advance Conversational AI Systems

Global Business and Digital Arts student Julia Sprague, alongside her Computation Health and Informatics Lab (CHIL) team, recently celebrated the publication of their paper, “ALOHA: Artificial Learning of Human Attributes for Dialogue Agents.” Led by Professor Jesse Hoey, the team’s paper was published in Google Scholar and accepted to the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) conference in New York, where the group presented their findings in February.

More than 135 registrants from Waterloo's main campus, the Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business and other institutions, descended upon the Stratford School Saturday morning to participate in StoryCamp, a 15-hour design competition on multimodal storytelling.

Global Business and Digital Arts student Victoria Vandenberg achieved 2nd place at the annual Communitech Code/Design to Win challenge held in Kitchener this past weekend.

Vandenberg and 5 other students from the Stratford School of Interaction Design and Business were among the top 25 finalists selected from 258 designers that participated in the preliminary on-campus challenges.

The five university students behind a project called Recreate didn't expect to win a digital arts project showcase.

"Absolutely not," said Pedja Ristic, who spoke on behalf of his group.
