An Exploratory Analysis of Wind Patterns in Alberta
We give an exploratory analysis of daily wind speed averages for all weather stations in Alberta, Canada from the Alberta Climate Information Service (ACIS). Our goal is to categorise wind patterns in Alberta with the aim of making it possible to incorporate this knowledge into spatio-temporal modelling of wind across Alberta. To do this, we use a seasonal clustering to identify stations with similar statistical properties using a distance criterion based on 2-dimensional moments. This information is used to identify various behaviours.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
