The Department of Applied Mathematics (AM) is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community to support all of our members in achieving both personal and professional fulfilment. To guide our efforts, we have established the AM Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee with representation from our students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty members. The goals of the committee are to raise awareness of EDI issues and resources, promote equitable and inclusive practices, and help the department strive for excellence by embracing diversity in talent, background, and perspectives.
For more about our rationale, expectations for conduct, and links to relevant university policies, please visit our statement on Equity and Inclusion Principles.
To welcome research students from a wide variety of cultural and academic backgrounds, and to facilitate mutual understanding between students and their supervisors, we have developed a discussion guide with questions to consider about expectations in supervision. There might be areas where your opinions or understanding may differ from your supervisor; it could be most helpful to discuss these topics early in your research relationship.
Some research groups within the department also have research group manuals that describe group-specific norms, such as those related to group meetings or travel to academic conferences.
