Former PhD student Sina Khani has received the 2015/2016 Applied Mathematics Graduate Research Award. This award, valued at $200, is given annually by the Department of Applied Mathematics to a graduate student  for an outstanding research paper. Dr. Khani received this award for his paper "Large eddy simulations of stratified turbulence: the dynamic Smagorinsky model”, which was published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics in 2015. This research investigated approaches for modelling fluid turbulence in the atmosphere and ocean. He defended his PhD in spring 2015.
