Professor Siv Sivaloganathan of the Department of Applied Mathematics was awarded the 2023 CAIMS-Fields Industrial Mathematics Prize at the annual meeting of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematical Society/ Société Canadienne de Mathématiques Appliquée et Industrielle (CAIMS/SCMAI) in June 2023. The prize recognizes exceptional research in any area of industrial mathematics conducted in Canada. Professor Sivaloganathan is the 12th recipient of the prize, which was first awarded in 2010.
The citation notes that “Professor Siv Sivaloganathan is a talented and accomplished bio-mathematician, who has made significant contributions in several areas of applied mathematics and is very clearly a leader in the field of mathematical medicine. He was the founding Director of the Centre for Mathematical Medicine at the Fields Institute. Earlier work on models of the brain led to a better understanding of hydrocephalus and its treatment. His modelling work on the use of High-Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) has led to the development of models to study the interaction of HIFU with biological tissue and has had impact on the use of this technology as a therapeutic modality for the treatment of cancers.”
