Professor Hans De Sterck began his appointment as Chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics on 1 July 2023.
He has been a faculty member at the Department since 2004 and is currently also the Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing. Known for his research in numerical methods for computational science and data science, Professor De Sterck was the inaugural Chair of the new SIAM Activity Group on Data Science and has served as Chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering.
Professor Siv Sivaloganathan, who has served as Department Chair since 2016 and provided leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic, reflected that “change is the only constant. It’s time for new leadership, fresh perspectives, and innovative approaches. So it’s indeed a pleasure to hand over the reins to Hans, who I am confident will lead the department with vision and energy and take it to even greater heights and success.”
The Department thanks Professor Sivaloganathan for his dedicated service and looks forward to many years of growth under the chairship of Professor De Sterck.
