Title
The interaction of tidally generated internal waves with an along-shelf current
Abstract
An analysis of low frequency tidally generated internal waves propagating into a geostrophic current is presented. Mooers’ and Kunze’s linear theories are discussed. Kunze’s theory is an approximation to Mooers’ theory and is appropriate for geostrophic flow with a low Rossby number and a high Richardson number. Ray tracing simulations following Kunze’s theory are conducted. The topography and geostrophic current of the simulation presented is modeled based on measured data from the Gulf Stream. This comparison highlights the propagation paths of low frequency waves under the influence of a geostrophic current.
