Localism in the Hellenistic World

The Waterloo Institute for Hellenistic Studies and the Parochial Polis Research Network at McGill University will jointly host a conference on “Localism in the Hellenistic World” in April 2018. The Hellenistic period is generally seen as a time of expanded horizons and shifting frontiers, with a diffusion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean and the Near East unprecedented in any previous era.

Biblical Figures in late Antique Poetry

This conference explores the relationship between poetry and scripture in the Latin, Greek, Syriac, and Hebrew poetic traditions of Late Antiquity (c. 300-700 CE), with a focus upon the reception of Genesis. Participants aim to further interdisciplinary dialogue, in order to understand better the numerous links and interactions between Hebrew, Syriac, Greek, and Latin literature of the period.

Black Sea Workshop

This one day workshop, being held on Monday November 12 from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm in HH 373, on Ancient Black Sea Studies will feature eight presentations displaying a broad range of ongoing Classical Scholarship and a variety of methodological approaches.  Some of the papers are assembled around the main themes of the SSHRC-sponsored research project Ethnic Identities nd Diplomatic Affiliations in the Bosporan Kingdom hosted at the University of Waterloo.  Each panel combines two papers of 20-25 minutes each, followed by a discussion of up to 30 minutes.  Participation in the works
