Self-compassion is often defined as giving yourself the same kindness and support you would give a good friend. Self-compassion is a process of turning compassion inward and caring for ourselves. Self-compassion means we have our own back or are on our own side as we navigate challenges, rather than being harsh or judgmental. Research has shown that self-compassion is a powerful source of resilience and supports recovery from trauma and grief. Self-compassion increases coping and improves both physical and mental well-being. Simply ask yourself, “if someone I cared for was going through this difficulty or feeling this way, what would I say or do for them?” Then, say and do that kindness for yourself.
