Annette has been a staff member at the University of Waterloo for 35 years. She enjoys doing what she can to make being a Waterloo community member more enjoyable for staff and students. In addition to her participation in this committee, she has held past roles with the University of Waterloo Staff Association, actively participated as a member of the Sexual Violence Prevention Strategy Group, and helped out at Engineering events where possible.
In her current role, she is happy to provide general operational oversight of the Engineering Nanotechnology Graduate Studies Program; Postdoctoral Fellow, Research Assistant Professor and Research Associate Professor supports; and International agreements involving Engineering.

Anna is a University Waterloo graduate with a degree in Social Development Studies, specializing in individual wellbeing and social work. She is passionate about social justice and addressing the intersection of systemic barriers and student wellness. As a graduate coordinator in Systems Design Engineering, she hopes to better advocate for the wellbeing of graduate students and their support needs. Renate Donnovan (she/her)
Faculty of Engineering (ALL) - Community Wellness Officer

In her first year of her undergraduate degree, Renate Donnovan became obsessed by the questions, “Why do some people bounce back from adversity more easily than others?” and “Can resilience be learned?” She has dedicated most of her life answering to those questions. Renate has worked in the area of resilience and coping for most of her career through a variety of roles. She has designed and instructed credit programs/course for post-secondary students, as well as delivered corporate training sessions in the areas of wellbeing, coping and resilience to private industry, government and first responders. In addition to her position as the Community Wellness Officer for the Faculty of Engieering, Renate is also a certified Life Coach and part-time PhD student in the University of Waterloo, School of Public Health. Her research focus is resilience, coping and wellbeing. Warning! Renate is passionate about wellbeing. If you ask her about it, she WILL talk about it (sometimes for hours)!
Renate supports intiatives and activies related to the Faculty of Engineering Wellness Framework, as well as provides wellness consulting and support for faculty, staff, and students in departments that do not have a dedicated wellness coordinator. Sam Vandekerckhove (he/him)
Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering - Student Wellness Coordinator

Since completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo, Sam has been keenly passionate about student health, wellbeing, and the genuine student experience on campus. He’s been involved in various positions at UW, including Assistant to the Petitions Committee in the Faculty of Arts (Examinations and Standings) and as an Academic Advisor in the Department of Psychology. Sam believes that a firm understanding of our institution’s policies and procedures assists him with finding the most suitable routes students can pursue when faced with adversity or other difficulties (academic or otherwise). Having a background in conflict resolution and communication, Sam is more than comfortable assisting students with a variety of different issues and is committed to promoting a more inclusive and supportive environment in the Faculty of Engineering. He’s also a pretty funny guy, but humour is just one of many characteristics that Sam brings to his role as the Student Wellness Coordinator for Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering!

Victoria Cotton (she/her)
Systems Design and Biomedical Engineering – Undergraduate Wellness and Administrative Coordinator

Victoria is a recent graduate with a degree in Developmental Psychology from the University of Windsor. She worked with students throughout her whole undergraduate degree in the form of mentoring, peer support, advocacy, and advising. Victoria worked in the Wellness Outreach Office for the University of Windsor, focusing on mental health literacy, and reducing the stigma around mental illness. During her undergraduate studies, Victoria specialized in the topics of mental health and gender-based violence. After graduating, she worked for the university by facilitating workshops to students about sexual assault intervention and prevention. Victoria hopes to go back to school someday and get a master’s degree in Social Work. For now, she is putting all her energy into being a supportive student advisor with an open door policy!
