Toshi Mito lived and worked in Rwanda for 9 years until 2016. Although currently living in Japan, he continues his interventions in Africa, with focus on renovating solid waste management in cities. Toshikazu Mito started his work career as a legal officer at the Japanese Environmental Agency in 1996. In this role, he worked to establish new environmental rules such as the Invasive Alien Species Act. Toshi then moved to Rwanda in 2007 and joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as an environmental officer. In 2009, he left both positions and became a freelance environmental consultant so he could stay in Rwanda, where he felt called to continue his work implementing interventions for various environmental topics such as climate change, asbestos eradication, landfill renovation, and organic apple production. He moved back to Japan in 2016, and is currently assisting solid waste management improvement in African cities together with the Japanese Government, UN, and the World Bank. He also works in local economic development in Japan, introducing renewable energy and artificial intelligence (AI). Toshi is a 2008 recipient of the Faculty of Environment Alumni Achievement Award.
