Geography students, are you curious about exploring career paths and learning how you can leverage skills from your degree after graduation? The Waterloo Association of Geography Students, aka WAGS, is hosting a virtual alumni career night on Thursday, March 10th from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. EST.

Catherine Brown (BES 2013, MSC 2017 )

Conservation Programs Specialists at Ducks Unlimited Canada

Experienced science educator, communicator, and researcher. Primary background in communicating best management/restoration practices for wetland and boreal forest ecosystems. I work for Ducks Unlimited Canada's Boreal Program, overseeing projects such as Wetland Hydrology Monitoring. In my spare time, co-founded the nonprofit group Boreal Nature Network to launch citizen science projects in northern communities and break down barriers between academics, the public, and data collection.

Matt Cowley

Matt Cowley (BES 2017, MES 2020)

Aquatic Technician at Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Since 2016, Matt has worked for DFO's Aquatic Invasive Species Program, a group specializing in the early detection and eradication of Asian carps (and other invasive fishes) in Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. As a technician with the field operations team, Matt leads electrofishing and netting crews responsible for monitoring high risk tributaries and wetlands for all lifestages of Asian carps as well as collecting baseline data on the basin's native fish assemblages.

Zahara Hassan

Zahara Hassan (BES 2018)

Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) Simulation GIS Technician at the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC)

In her current role, Zahara is responsible for working on ZEB predictive modeling and geospatial data analysis aiding cities and transit agencies across Canada and the US to plan their fleet electrification.  

Prior to CUTRIC, Zahara worked in the geospatial field on road infrastructure assets within the transportation industry. Her professional experiences are primarily related to the use of GIS applications to solve contemporary urban and environmental challenges. She is passionate about the role that smart, sustainable transportation and infrastructure play in the development of vibrant and resilient cities. 

Jaydeep Mistry

Jaydeep Mistry (BES 2017) 

Data Engineer at BlueDot.global

Jaydeep is a dedicated Alumni of Geography from UWaterloo. He has achieved an Undergraduate in Geomatics, and a Master of Geography from the Faculty of Environment. He specializes in Geographical Information Science (GIS). He currently works as a Data Engineer for BlueDot.global, helping them perform geospatial analytics using big data.
