As Canada’s aviation sector struggles through post-pandemic turbulence, a major University of Waterloo initiative has taken off to offer it stability — and even clearer skies ahead. Since its founding in late 2021, the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) has assembled a diverse, multidisciplinary team of more than 100 academics pooling world-class talents to deal with the challenges facing this vital industry, all while mentoring a new generation who will continue the job.

To explore possibilities for collaboration on academic and research activities of mutual interest, the University of Waterloo has signed a memorandum of understanding with Diponegoro University in Indonesia, a public institution in Semarang, Central Java.

There is lots of work underway at the University of Waterloo to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From March 6 to 10, Waterloo community members from across campus will be marking SDG Week Canada by hosting activities to showcase their efforts to advance the goals.

To support Indonesia’s efforts to scale-up its climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts, the Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) project was launched earlier this week in Jakarta. Faculty of Environment researchers working together with colleagues in the Faculty of Mathematics and partners in Indonesia will explore carbon pricing and trading, and nature-based solutions to assist Indonesia with building a low-carbon economy and a healthier, more sustainable future.

Engaged in research projects around themes of food, agriculture, and the environment, Dr. Jennifer Clapp, Canada Research Chair and professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, was inducted into the Swedish Royal Academy of Agriculture and Forestry as a new international fellow on January 28, 2023.

Taking us on her experience trekking through Western Nepal, Caitlin Laidlaw, a master’s student in Geography & Environmental Management, answers the question: how do locals who live with snow leopards feel about conservation? Her short documentary is this year’s second place GRADflix competition winner alongside five other graduate students from the Faculty of Environment who placed in the top 25 finalists. Today's students learn best through experiential learning. Fieldtrips give them the opportunity to touch, feel, and hear what they're learning about in the classroom as well as experience new cultures and practices outside of their own world. Upper-year undergraduate students taking GEOG 460 visited four local community projects to learn about food sustainability in Waterloo Region.
