The Faculty of Environment has established an endowed scholarship in honour of Professor Jean Andrey, lovingly known as Dean Jean, a beloved educator, collaborator, applied researcher and respected administrator who has dedicated more than 30 years of service to the University of Waterloo and its community. With her leadership and vision, Dean Jean has built a culture of inclusivity, creativity, collegiality, transparency and caring in all that we do.
Dean Jean Andrey joined the University of Waterloo as an assistant professor in geography in 1989. During her time at Waterloo, Andrey has brought her talents to several important committees, councils, and roles including the Partners for Action Advisory Committee, the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation Advisory Committee, WISE Advisory Council, Associate Dean, Director of the Waterloo-Laurier Joint Graduate Program in Geography, President of the Canadian Association of Geographers, and of course the Faculty of Environment’s Dean position for over 6 years. Andrey has won several awards for her outstanding teaching including a 1995 University of Waterloo Distinguished Teaching Awards, 2012 Women of Waterloo Region (WOW) award in the education category, a Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Teaching Award in 2004, and a Canadian Association of Geographers Award for Excellence in Teaching Geography in 2000.

Recipients are selected based on their demonstrated leadership, academic excellence, and passion for the environment.
Alumni, friends, faculty, staff, retirees, and the broader community are invited to support the Jean Andrey Environment Leadership Scholarship's Fund to celebrate Dean Jean’s remarkable legacy and empower the next generation of sustainability leaders and change makers.
"Prior to her term as Dean, Dr. Andrey was my thesis advisor while researching price elasticity of demand for transit services. She was instrumental in guiding me through the complexities of both the engineering and social sciences. But she did not stop there. She showed a deep interest in my career, which led to continued dialogue long after I left Waterloo and has only intensified over the last several years. Dr. Andrey leaves a legacy that transcends the corridors of campus buildings. Her remarkable strength of character, one I wish to emulate, has illuminated my intellectual curiosity, and warmed my heart." - Mario Bozzo, BES, Urban Planning, Class of 1993
