Nine Waterloo researchers will receive more than $17 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation(CFI) for infrastructure to support their research.

The awards from CFI’s Innovation Fund were announced today by Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science. Waterloo researchers chosen for funding through the Innovation Fund are:

The Institute for Quantum Computing is pleased to announce a call for entries to the Quantum Shorts flash fiction competition. The competition is open to stories up to 1000 words long that take inspiration from quantum physics and include the phrase “There are only two possibilities: yes or no”. The competition is free to enter, offering prizes of up to US $1500.

And while passion will ultimately help scientists who belong to a marginalized group, women and others will also need a strong support network, role models and a good relationship with an academic supervisor, according to female scientists who shared their experiences at the recent Women in Physics Canada (WIPC) conference held at Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing.

Cutting-edge science met centuries-old traditions when researchers from the Institute for Quantum Computing trekked to the Canadian territory of Nunavut to share ideas.

Researchers experimentally demonstrated the creation of photon triplets, correlated by time, using a quantum dot molecule. This is the first step in generating entangled photon triplets in a solid state system, which could be useful for quantum communication protocols, as well as third-party cryptography.

“The quantum revolution is upon us and Canadians are helping lead the way,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau via video remarks at the Institute for Quantum Computing’s (IQC) 15^th anniversary celebration.

On June 22, dignitaries and fellow scientists from around the world gathered to mark 15 years of quantum research excellence at the University of Waterloo and the leadership of Raymond Laflamme who ends his term as IQC Executive Director on June 30, 2017.
