Thailand enjoys a thriving economy based on tourism and agriculture, and has been regarded as an up-and-coming business destination, with a community welcome to foreign investments and companies. The government of Thailand has long recognized the importance of research and development in the high-tech, agricultural, health-care and communications sectors, and has invested in world-class, ready-made infrastructure to attract the world's best and brightest talent.
Nations within the Pacific Rim are very attractive partners to WIN, opening large and developing markets for western technology. Business and operational costs like office rental space is very affordable and reasonable as compared to other countries, and there is a large pool of highly-skilled technical personnel.
The National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) is the leading nanotechnology research center and the only national nanotechnology hub in Thailand. Established on 13 August 2003, NANOTEC is one of four research agencies operating under the jurisdiction of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
Research themes at NANOTEC align very well with all four of WIN's key thematic areas which include smart & functional materials, connected devices, energy, and therapeutics & theranostics. More specifically, NANOTEC platform technology currently focuses on functional nanostructures for catalysis, biological and chemical sensor applications (e-nose, e-tongue and e-eye), nano-coatings for surface/interface functionalization (anti-bacteria, anti-corrosion), and nano-encapsulation (drug delivery, cosmeceuticals, agriculture and environmental protection). All of which are areas of expertise at WIN, and as such there is considerable research overlap between our two institutes.
A WIN-NANOTEC partnership would open opportunities for UW/WIN to access to larger Asian markets who are in need of technological advancement and products to support the needs of industry, residence and the growing population.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
