Program Description

The Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) Central European Institute of Technology, Brno University of Technology (CEITEC BUT) Joint Seed Funding Program is a competitive program designed to foster interdisciplinary research between international partners for “high risk-high reward” blue-sky discoveries typically not supported by traditional granting agencies. The intent of the program is to kickstart research that can provide some initial data points and insights as a first step in targeting various established funding programs.

Funding Amount

The WIN-CEITEC BUT Joint Seed Funding Program will span over three years, from 2024 to 2026, with one call per year. The total budget for this program is 3,000,000 CZK from CEITEC BUT and $180,000 CAD from WIN.

For the 2024 competition year, the program will have a funding envelope consisting of 1,000,000 CZK from CEITEC BUT and $60,000 CAD from WIN. The maximum funding request for each submitted proposal is 500,000 CZK for CEITEC BUT applicants, and $30,000 CAD for WIN members.

The project duration for the requested funding is for one year.

The approved grantees in any given competition year will have the opportunity to apply for projects in future calls.  

Eligibility and Team Composition

The team must consist of at least one full-time faculty member at the Brno University of Technology’s Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC), and one full-time Core member of the University of Waterloo’s Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN). Associate Members of WIN can apply as co-applicants.

Application 

The proposal should contain the following sections:

Length

The exact distribution of pages among the sections is at the applicant’s discretion. The proposal should be a maximum 5 pages in total.

Format

Applicants should only use a standard, single-column on an 8.5” x 11” or A4 page layout. The proposal must be written using a 12-point, black-coloured font, single line spacing (six lines per inch) and with no condensed type or spacing, with a margin of no less than 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) around the page.

Plain Language Summary

The submission of the proposal should also include the Plain Language Summary (1500 characters).
