Keynotes:
Helen Angus is currently the chair of the board of Public Health Ontario. Helen had a 30-year progressive career in the public sector including 20 years working for the Government of Ontario, 10 years working in government agencies as well as four years in management consulting. From June 2018 to September 2021 Helen served as Ontario’s Deputy Minister of Health and led the health response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as an ambitious health sector modernization agenda. During her time with the Ontario Government, Helen also served as the Deputy Minister of Treasury Board; Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade, Seniors Affairs and Women’s Issues.
Peter Wallace is a senior fellow at the Munk Institute of Global Affairs and Public Policy and a senior advisor at the Boston Consulting Group. He recently retired as the secretary of the Treasury Board for the Government of Canada in late 2021, concluding 40 years of public service across all levels of government. Peter previously served as the city manager for Toronto, secretary to the Cabinet and as the head of the Public Service for Ontario. Earlier roles included at the Province of Ontario Deputy Minister of Finance and secretary to Treasury Board, Deputy Minister of Energy, and associate secretary to Cabinet and Deputy Minister, Policy.
Peter is an independent trustee for the University Health Network. He is past chair of the Ontario Financing Authority, Great Lakes Fishery Commission and Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, with a bachelor’s degree in Political Economy and Master of Public Administration.
Moderator
David O’Toole is the president and CEO of Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). In his role he leads the organization in identifying the health information priorities for Canada’s health care systems, in collaboration with federal, provincial and territorial governments. This includes providing these jurisdictions with integrated health information that contributes to the improvement of population health outcomes and health system performance. He has been CEO at CIHI since 2014. David is also an adjunct professor in the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University. He recently completed a four-year term as the inaugural chair of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre board and is a past member of the Board of Directors of SCAN Health, a Canadian centre of excellence identifying and promoting best practices in health care supply chains.
Panelist
Dr. Sacha Bhatia is the executive lead, Population Health and Value-based Health Systems, at Ontario Health. Previously, he was the FM Hill Chair in Health Systems Solutions, the chief medical innovation officer of Women’s College Hospital (WCH), as well as the division head of Cardiology at WCH. A scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (IC/ES) and an associate professor at the University of Toronto, he has been published in international peer reviewed journals like the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA Internal Medicine. In 2013, he founded the Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV) and served as its director until 2019. He has been a commentator on Bloomberg News, CTV News and the CBC, and has been asked to give over 100 presentations internationally, nationally and regionally over the past six years.
He is a recipient of the American College of Cardiology’s Young Investigator Award, the American Society of Echocardiography’s Arthur E. Weyman Young Investigator Award, and most recently the Goldie Award for Quality and Innovation and the Louise Lemieux Charles Emerging Leader award at the University of Toronto. Dr. Bhatia received his medical degree and MBA at McGill University and his internal medicine and cardiology training in Toronto.
Panelist
John Hirdes is a professor in the School of Public Health Sciences, University of Waterloo and a Fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs. In addition, he is the Senior Canadian Fellow and a board member of interRAI (www.interRAI.org), an international consortium of researchers from over 35 countries. He chairs interRAI's Network for Mental Health and the interRAI Network of Canada.
Professor Hirdes has 250+ publications in peer reviewed journals and academic book chapters. His primary areas of interest include assessment, mental health, aging, health services, case mix systems, quality measurement, and quantitative research methods.
Panelist
Anita Layton is the Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematical Biology and Medicine, and professor of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Pharmacy and Biology at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on the development and application of mathematical models to gain insights into the physiology and pathophysiology of the mammalian kidneys. In particular, she is interested in understanding the cardiovascular benefits of novel antiglyceamic therapies in diabetes and chronic kidney diseases, and in unraveling the mechanisms underlying the sex differences in blood pressure regulation. She is an associate editor of SIAM Review Book Section, an associate editor of SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, an editor of the AI/Machine Learning Section of Hypertension, and an associate editor of Maple Transactions. Additionally, she serves as the associate dean, Research and International, for the Faculty of Mathematics, and chairs the Research Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council at the University of Waterloo.
