The Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) and the Department of Chemical Engineering are proud to present a joint seminar by Assoc. Prof. Lucy Vojtová from the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC), Brno University of Technology (BUT), Czech Republic.
This seminar will be held on March 2, 2023 at 10:00AM via Zoom. Registration required!
Registration is required. If you have any questions or issues registering, please contact win-office@uwaterloo.ca.
Associate professor L. Vojtová is the head of the Advanced Biomaterials group at CEITEC located in central Europe. She will present an overview of their interest and research focused primarily on the design and synthesis of “smart” high-performance stimuli-responsive functional polymers and composites including nano- and submicron fillers for biomedical applications. She will also highlight hydrogel self-assembly, surface nanopatterning, sol-gel transitions, release- and lifetime-controlled biomaterials serving as drug carriers or scaffolds for both hard and soft tissue regeneration. Materials processed via rapid prototyping, freeze-drying, or spinning will be discussed as well in terms of biological in vitro, ex ovo, ex vivo, or in vivo evaluation. I hope to provide a flavor of the research our group is performing and to spark your interest in potential future collaborations.
Assoc. Prof. Lucy Vojtová is currently a Group leader of the Advanced biomaterials group at the Central European Institute of Technology, Brno University of Technology (BUT), Czech Republic. Assoc. Prof. (2015) and PhD (2000) she obtained at BUT in the Macromolecular chemistry specialization field. In the period of 1999-2002, she completed a post-doctoral position at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, Columbia University in the City of New York, USA where she participated in projects supported by the US NSF and NIH. After returning back to the Czech Republic in 2002, she started working as a researcher at the Faculty of Chemistry, the Institute of Materials Chemistry. Since August 2011, she has also been a researcher at the Central European Institute of Technology leading and participating in numerous national and international projects. She is a specialist in the advanced synthesis, characterization and additive manufacturing (3D/4D bioprinting) of novel “smart” high-performance stimuli-responsive polymers, and composites with controlled life-time enabling the release of bioactive substances. Her group is focused on structure-property relationship evaluation, bioactive molecules and nanoparticle encapsulation, and preparation of cell or drug carriers based on natural or synthetic polymers and composites for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. In-vitro and in-vivo evaluations are provided under wide collaboration with noticeable universities, research institutes and industrial partners. She is a member of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS), the Society for Composite and Carbon Materials, and the Society for Bioimplantology. Lucy Vojtová is the author of more than 70 articles in prestigious international journals and is the holder of 9 patents. In addition to her scientific activities, she lectures to experts and the wider public and supervises bachelor's, diploma and dissertation theses. Under her leadership, her students won numerous awards. In 2013 she was awarded by the Rector of BUT as "The successful declarer in 2013" and in 2019 she obtained Werner von Siemens Award for supervising the Best thesis.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is co-ordinated within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
