About the Event

WIN Summer School: Innovation for a Sustainable Future

The WIN Summer School is a unique opportunity for exceptional undergraduate STEM students from across Canada to dive into the world of nanotechnology and sustainability. This immersive program combines the pillars of Impact, Insight, and Entrepreneurship, empowering students to explore how advanced materials and devices can address global challenges.

Hosted at the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre, participants will gain exclusive access to state-of-the-art labs and facilities, attend lectures by WIN faculty and graduate researchers, and engage with cutting-edge research across WIN’s thematic areas:

Sustainable Development Goals
  • Smart & Functional Materials
  • Connected Devices
  • Next-Generation Energy Systems
  • Therapeutics & Theranostics

All topics align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), ensuring a global perspective on innovation.

Students will also connect with Waterloo’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, including visits to incubators and local startups, gaining firsthand insight into how research translates into real-world impact.The program culminates in a team-based hackathon, where participants apply their newly acquired knowledge to develop solutions for real-world sustainability challenges.

Summer School Details

Location: Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre, 200 University Avenue West, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 3G1

EligibilityThe WIN Summer School is open to undergraduate students who:

  • Are currently studying in a STEM field at a Canadian university

  • Have completed at least one year of their undergraduate program

  • Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents

Accommodation & SupportParticipants will receive:

  • Free on-campus housing for 3 nights, including all meals

  • A $500 honorarium to help subsidize travel costs

2026 WIN Summer School on Med-tech and Sustainable Nanotechnology

  • Start Date: Early June 2026
  • Application: expected to open in March 2026
