WIN Seminar Series: Multiphase Multi-scale Transport in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell and Development of Simulation ToolsExport this event to calendar

Friday, April 12, 2019 — 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM EDT

Please join the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology on Monday, April 12, 2019 for a guest lecture by Dr. Kui Jiao from the State key Laboratory of Engines and vice dean of School of Mechanical Engineering at the Tianjin University, China. He will be speaking on "Multiphase multi-scale transport in proton exchange membrane fuel cell and development of simulation tools".

Abstract:

This presentation will show our recent progress in the development of simulation tools, investigation on transport phenomena, and design for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at Tianjin University. The simulation tools include 1+1D and 3D models for PEMFC dynamics and design optimization, two-phase direct numerical simulation (DNS) model for droplet dynamics in channel and electrode microstructures, lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with real density and viscosity ratios for two-phase dynamics, and multiphase model for ice formation/growth in electrode microstructures. Some transport phenomena involving gas, liquid and ice, and new structural designs such as metal-foam PEMFC will also be discussed.

Bio:

Kui Jiao is currently a professor in the State Key Laboratory of Engines and vice dean of School of Mechanical Engineering at the Tianjin University, China. Under supervision of Prof. Xianguo Li, he received his Ph.D. degree in 2011 from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in the field of mechanical engineering. He has been working in a wide variety of research fields including fuel cell, thermoelectric generator and turbocharger compressor. He has published over 100 international journal papers with 2000+ citations and an h-index of 30. He has been granted the “National Natural Science Foundation of China – Outstanding Youth Foundation” in 2016, and the “UK Royal Society – Advanced Newton Fellowship” in 2018. He has led 20+ national and industrial projects in China, and provided modeling and simulation services in development of fuel cell engines for many major automotive fuel cell manufactures such as SAIC Motor, FAW Motor, Weichai Power, Yutong Bus and Sunrise Power.
