As Canada’s largest nanotechnology institute, committed to United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) actively celebrates emerging leaders in nanoscience and nanotechnology. These individuals from across the globe whose research aligns with one or more of our thematic areas and the UN SDGs are eligible for the WIN Rising Star Award in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. This year’s recipient is Dr Fengwang Li, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Sydney Nano Institute, and ARC Centre of Excellence for Green Electrochemical Transformation of Carbon Dioxide, The University of Sydney, Sydney Australia.

Dr. Fengwang Li is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. He is an electrochemist by training with a particular interest in CO2 electrocatalysis, green hydrogen, and ammonia. Dr. Li earned his PhD in Chemistry in 2017 from Monash University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto. He has published over 90 research articles in top-tier journals including Nature and Science. His research has been recognized by many prestigious awards, including 2024 Australian Research Council Future Fellowship, 2023 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Outstanding ECRs, and 2021 MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35 China list.
“I am deeply humbled and grateful to receive the WIN Rising Star Award. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit of our work on green CO2 electrocatalysis at the University of Sydney,” said Dr. Li when informed about being selected as the recipient of the prestigious award.
The award was formally announced on Thursday, November 28 during WIN Research Day, during which a short recorded video of Dr. Li’s acceptance was played. Dr. Li will accept the award in person and give a talk on Thursday, May 1, 2025, during WIN Day.
