On March 8th, 2024, WIN hosted an event for International Women’s Day dedicated to celebrating and supporting women in STEM in the Quantum Nano Centre 3rd floor lounge. We were honoured to have several inspiring women-identified WIN members share their personal experiences, career pathways, and express their thoughts being a woman in the STEM fields.
International Women’s Day serves as a source of inspiration and empowerment for women. It offers an opportunity for women to share their stories, celebrate their successes, support each other, and connect. This is very a very important event, highlighting the achievements women have made in STEM and all professional fields, for others to learn from and be inspired by their respected pathways, and help serve as examples to others.
The event was opened by WIN Executive Director Sushanta Mitra, who spoke on the importance of gender equity and celebration of gender diversity. Josslyn Gabriel from the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism also forwarded opening remarks about International Women’s Day which was read by Sushanta Mitra, as she was not able to attend the event.
We are incredibly thankful for the following professors who shared their stories and advice with our students and staff:
- Moira Glerum (Biology)
- Carolyn Ren (Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering)
- Veronika Magdanz (Systems Design Engineering)
- Na Young Kim (Electrical & Computer Engineering)
- Shirley Tang (Chemistry, and Associate Dean of Research, Faculty of Science)
No two paths to success will be the same, so sharing these stories are important to help foster inspiration and encouragement. Their impactful words and experiences made the event truly enlightening and inspiring for all who attended.
We appreciate everyone who came to this event, WIN hopes to continue to celebrate International Women’s Day annually!
