Congratulations to WIN member Juewen Liu (Department of Chemistry) for his continued leadership in advancing innovative research in DNA-based materials. Recognized as one of Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers, Liu’s work explores DNA beyond its traditional role, positioning it as a versatile chemical tool with wide-ranging applications.

His research team has developed over 100 aptamers—short DNA sequences that bind to specific targets such as drugs, metal ions, and metabolites—enabling new approaches in biosensing, therapeutics, and environmental monitoring. A notable example includes a DNA sequence that binds to the cornea, offering the potential to improve eye treatments by helping medications remain in place longer, particularly for conditions such as dry eye disease.

With a strong focus on foundational science, Liu’s work has influenced a global research community and laid the groundwork for future advances across multiple disciplines. His research continues to demonstrate the far-reaching impact of DNA-based technologies in addressing real-world challenges.
