Biography

Milad Kamkar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. His work is focused on structure property relationship of soft materials. During his PhD, professor Kamkar has made significant contributions to the understanding of the nano- and micro-structural features of polymeric systems (polymer nanocomposites, blends, solutions, hydrogels, etc.) via advanced linear and nonlinear rheological techniques. After his Ph.D., he worked on 3D printing and liquid-in-liquid printing of nanomaterials-based hydrogels/polymers/suspensions for electrical applications including fabrication of electromagnetic shields and sensors with complex geometries.

Very recently, he devised a novel technique for processing low viscosity nanomaterials’ suspensions. This was achieved by a co-assembly process, coined Liquid Streaming (LS), that involves oppositely charged nanomaterials and surfactants adsorbed at the interface of immiscible fluids. His current research focuses on synthesis and advanced manufacturing of sustainable (CNC, CNF, Chitin nanocrystal) and synthetic nanomaterials (graphene, MXene, etc.) for fabrication of multifunctional soft materials and light-weight structures realizing application in different fields including electronics, the military, robotics, medicine, and wastewater treatment.

Professor Kamkar has been also honored with more than 25 institutional, provincial, national, and international awards during his academic career, including 2022 Young Researcher Polymer Processing Award. So far, he has published more than 40 papers in peer-review journals, such as Small, Carbon, and Macromolecules.
