As Canada’s largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe, Poland presents a key strategic opportunity for WIN and Canadian researchers in connecting with Eastern European markets and research. In 2021, bilateral trade between Canada and Poland reached a record high of CAD $3.1 billon, further solidifying the longstanding and stable political and economic relationship between the two counties.
With plans of increasing government expenditure on research and development, Poland and the University of Warsaw are poised to increase their presence as a STEM hub. In 2019 alone, gross domestic expenditure on R&D increased 18.1% over the previous year, showcasing Poland’s drive for ensuring their presence as leaders in STEM research in Central and Eastern Europe.
In May 2013, the Framework-Agreement between the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Waterloo and the University of Warsaw Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MISMaP College) in Warsaw, Poland, was signed. MISMap in an elite college in one of the top-ranked universities in STEM in Eastern Europe.
The Cooperation Agreement facilitates joint research activities, publications and reports, faculty and student exchanges, workshops, conferences and seminars, and joint education and training programs.
Since 2013, nine graduate students from the University of Warsaw’s MISMaP College (the elite interdisciplinary college for exceptional students) visited WIN for 2-month research internships working with faculty in the fields of nanobiotechnology, nanomaterials development and device design and fabrication.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
