Course requirements
Students who choose the Master of Management Sciences (MMSc) degree must complete a total of eight courses (.50 weight), at the 600 or 700 level. Students can take up to two (2) 500 level Management Science and Engineering courses can count towards your MMSc degree.
Of the eight courses, the four required courses are MSE 603, 605, 607, and 609. Please note, if a student has a strong background in operations research, they have the option of replacing MSE 603 with MSE 634, which is a more advanced course on a similar topic.
Students must take at least four additional courses (.50 weight per course), totalling a minimum requirement of eight courses overall.
No more than one course from outside the department may be credited towards your MMSc degree. This course will require department approval. This must be approved prior to enrolling in the course in Quest for it to count toward your degree requirements. This includes OVGS courses.
Please submit an Elective Pre-Approval Request Form for approval before enrolment opens in quest.
Students who have completed their BASc degree in Management Engineering at the University of Waterloo are required to choose their courses in consultation with the associate chair for graduate studies.
No exemptions.
Management Sciences Graduate Students must maintain an overall average of at least 73% at the end of each term, with no more than two failed courses overall.
A grade less than 65% in any course counts as a failure. A failed core course must be repeated (one time only) and a failed elective must be replaced. A failed course will count toward your overall GPA but does not count toward the eight course requirement.
Part-time vs. full-time
Most students complete the MMSc program via full-time study. This is done with a maximum of three courses per term. Completion of the MMSc coursework program taken full-time usually takes one year.
If you wish to consider completing the MMSc program via part-time study, you do need to be aware that the courses are not scheduled separately for part-time students and are usually held within the core university hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Completion of the MMSc coursework program on a part-time basis can take up to three years.
On campus vs. online
The Department of Management Science and Engineering also offers this degree via online learning.
All eight Master of Management Sciences course requirements are delivered via live interactive web-based tutorials.

Note: The Online Master of Management Sciences (MMSc) – Management of Technology program is part-time only.
Switching to Master of Applied Science (MASc)
Students who begin in the MMSc (coursework) program and find they would like to consider research in the field can switch to the thesis-based, Master of Applied Science (MASc) program. This requires finding a supervisor and completing a program change form. The courses required for both master's degrees are offered in the fall term so a faculty member may wish to see your fall term results before they commit to becoming your supervisor. Since the initial courses for both are the same, if you are successful and the program change is approved by the supervisor and department, you would receive credit for the courses you successfully completed.
Most PhD programs in Canada will only consider admission from a thesis based program. If you hope to eventually pursue a PhD, it's advised you consider the Master of Applied Science (MASc) program.
Funding
Unfortunately, the Department of Management Science and Engineering is unable to offer funding for MMSc students.
The University of Waterloo Graduate Studies Office has a substantial database of scholarships, grants and bursaries available to graduate students in Canada.
