Kevin's research was featured in AIP SciLight, Covering Surfaces with Copper Destroys Coronavirus. The group found that thin films of the metal could have virucidal uses on common surfaces, masks. They tested different antiviral coatings against a coronavirus and found that only the Cu-containing coatings killed the virus. The fact that these coatings killed the coronavirus effectively wasn't a big surprise (Cu is a well-established antiviral material); what was particularly interesting was that a Cu thin film can peel off a surface and dissolve in a viral droplet very quickly, providing an enhanced viricidal response.
