MME professors are among those awarded funding for future-focused projects
Two professors in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering have been awarded funding to support their research as part of the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program. This program invests money to retain and attract some of the world’s most promising researchers. Here’s who made the list from MME:
Dr. Mihaela Vlasea Vlasea received Tier 2 NSERC CRD for Sustainable Additive Manufacturing, which amounts to $500,000, plus $100,000 from the federal research fund. Her research will focus on sustainability in manufacturing by advancing binder jetting additive manufacturing (BJAM) for a more cost-effective, scalable, and efficient technology for producing parts. By conducting this research, she looks to overcome material and quality limitations to enable BJAM for industrial-scale use and further encourage sustainable productions to help achieve environmental and economic goals.
Dr. Ehsan Toyserkani has had his Tier 1 NSERC CRC funding renewed for Intelligent Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing in the amount of $1.4 million. Under his research, he is advancing laser-based metal additive manufacturing (AM) for industrial applications. This research is also focusing on sustainability and resilience in production. The project will use AI-driven quality assurance for in-situ monitoring to detect anomalies during AM processes, integrating assessment into the life cycle of quality algorithms to support sustainable AM. Plus, this research will help enhance Canada’s additive manufacturing capabilities by training professionals and transitioning to reliable, scalable, and environmentally friendly AM technologies.
