The 37th annual Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) was hosted by the University of Waterloo from January 29th-31, 2016. The competition included 16 Universities from across Ontario. The competitors are selected by different Universities through qualification events or other selection criteria. In the junior and senior design competitions, teams of four are given a previously undisclosed problem and the teams are required to design, build, demonstrate, and present a solution to a panel of judges. The time allocated for design, construction, and in creating a presentation is 6 hours.

The University of Waterloo ‘A’ society junior design team consisting of 4 members from department of Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering placed 1st in the junior design category. In junior design, competitors must work within limiting time and budget constraints to design, create, and test a physical prototype of their proposed solution.

The University of Waterloo ‘A’ society senior design team also consisting of 4 members from department of Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering placed 2nd in the senior design category. In senior design engineering students completing their final years of study need to showcase an advanced ability for technical design and problem-solving.

The Ontario Engineering Competition also serves as a qualifier for the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) where the top two teams in the design competitions will represent the region. Both the junior and senior design team will be moving on to compete in the Canadian Engineering Competition in March 2016, representing both Ontario and the University of Waterloo.
