MME Congratulates Class of 2020

This is the first virtual convocation in our history. Today, we in MME want to celebrate you.

Until we can come together for a proper Convocation Ceremony in person, please have a look at what our Faculty and Staff have put together, especially for you.

Congratulations to the MME graduating class of 2020!  We are Waterloo Warriors!  #UWaterlooGrad

Back in September of 2019, University of Waterloo’s fourth-year Mechatronics Engineering students, Connor Simmons, Aditya Matam, Brian Mao, Sam Raisbeck decided to make a Capstone project based on a solution to an issue a friend described working as a first responder. Little did they know COVID-19 was around the corner.

Vincent Van Gogh once said, “What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?”

Clearly, Ayush Wadehra, who is going into fourth year as a Mechatronics student, took his love of Van Gogh and courage to technologically create an award-winning 3D printed version of The Starry Night – 131 years after the original was painted by Van Gogh, while living in isolation, in an asylum, in June 1889.

This 3D version has moving parts.

Congratulations to our alumni at Otto Motors, a division of Clearpath Robotics, who announced an additional $29 million (USD) Series C funding raise June 1st -  led by the Kensington Private Equity Fund Private Equity Fund with participation from BMO Capital Partners, Export Development Canada (EDC), and previous investors iNovia Capital and RRE Ventures. This raise adds to the $54 million (USD) previously raised, for a total of $83 million (USD) in funding.

Patricia Nieva and William Melek, both Mechanical and Mechatronics Professors, have partnered with Facedrive Health, to incorporate the new algorithms they’re developing into a smart phone contact tracing app called TraceSCAN.

In isolation due to COVID-19Zhongchao (Chao) Tan, Professor of University of Waterloo’s Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, spent two months writing and self-publishing an English resource book because he understands first-hand the formal, non-native, English writing challenges to engineering international students who come to Canada from another country.

SWE.org calls Dr. Mary Wells one of the ten global “Woman Engineers You Should Know

Dr. Mary Wells is a champion.

The Society of Engineers (SWE.org) honoured the soon-to-be Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, at University of Waterloo, for her dedication to championing the representation of women in engineering fields.

She is the only Canadian on the list.

RoboHub technician and long time MME staff member, Robert Wagner, develops a swab booth to test people for COVID-19

The PPE-Free swab testing booth works by providing a hard physical barrier to significantly reduce the amount of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed to test patients and protect healthcare professionals.

Welcome to our ONLINE Mechatronics Engineering Capstone Design Symposium Showcase!

Our thirteenth annual Mechatronics Engineering Capstone Design Symposium was canceled the day of the symposium due to the spread of Covid-19 concerns.

This exciting event provides our final-year student teams an opportunity to showcase their design projects to the general public, to industry partners and sponsors, and to the university community.
