The International Association for Green Energy and Tianjin University are hosting the 13th International Green Energy Conference. The IGEC is happening on July 15-18th virtually. 

The IGEC is a multi–disciplinary conference on energy systems and technologies with no/reduced environmental, economic and social impact, and provides a forum for the exchange of technical information, for the dissemination of high-quality research results, and for the debate and shaping of future directions and priorities in energy sustainability and security.

World Fuel Cell Conference

The World Fuel Cell Conference (WFCC) is happening August 16th-20th 2021. The WFCC will be a virtual event due to the current situation. The WFCC is organized by the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, CHFCA, Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology and the University of Waterloo.  

Congratulations to Roydon Fraser for winning the 2021 Order of Honour (Officer) from the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). Each year, the Professional Engineers Ontario designates outstanding individuals as members, officers and companions.

Congratulations to Arash Arami for being selected as one of the keynote speakers at the International Congress of Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME 2021). The CSME 2021 lasts for three days long, starting on June 28th to the 30th.

ApplyBoard raises $375M in funding

Congratulations to Martin Basiri, the CEO and co-founder of ApplyBoard, for their recent success on fundraising. In the Series D funding, ApplyBoard raised $375 million at a post-money valuation of 4 billion. Martin obtained his Mechatronics Master's degree in 2010 and with his brothers, Meti and Massi started ApplyBoard in 2015.

Congratulations to Mihaela Vlasea for her accomplishments and continued aspirations as Smart Manufacturing magazine named her one of the 20 most influential academics. Mihaela was instrumental in helping to open the doors of her metal additive manufacturing lab to companies interested in trying out the advanced technology. Her focus is on metal additive manufacturing, with a sub-focus on binder jetting and powder bed fusion. Read more on the FOE news page

PhD student in MME, Bronwyn Forrest, has won two awards, an NSERC – CGSD Award and also a Student Research Award from SFPE for her research entitled “Human Physiological Response to Fire Exposure: A Comprehensive Model”.  As cross-disciplinary research, Bronwyn will complete her research at the UW Fire Research Labs under the co-supervision of Paolo Dominelli in Kinesiology and Beth Weckman in MME.

Bronwyn Forrest, Paolo Dominelli and Beth Weckmanwere recently granted a 2021 Catalyst Grant from the Network for Aging Research to study specific concerns related to the impact of fire gases and smoke on the ability of elderly and mobility impaired occupants to egress from burning structures. They are one of five teams that received the 2021 Catalyst Grant this Spring.
