Congratulations to our MME professors who have been awarded a 2020 Outstanding Performance Award. The winners of the award include:

Congratulations to Mihaela Vlasea for her accomplishments and continued aspirations as Smart Manufacturing magazine named her one of the 20 most influential academics. Mihaela was instrumental in helping to open the doors of her metal additive manufacturing lab to companies interested in trying out the advanced technology. Her focus is on metal additive manufacturing, with a sub-focus on binder jetting and powder bed fusion. Read more on the FOE news page

PhD student in MME, Bronwyn Forrest, has won two awards, an NSERC – CGSD Award and also a Student Research Award from SFPE for her research entitled “Human Physiological Response to Fire Exposure: A Comprehensive Model”.  As cross-disciplinary research, Bronwyn will complete her research at the UW Fire Research Labs under the co-supervision of Paolo Dominelli in Kinesiology and Beth Weckman in MME.

Bronwyn Forrest, Paolo Dominelli and Beth Weckmanwere recently granted a 2021 Catalyst Grant from the Network for Aging Research to study specific concerns related to the impact of fire gases and smoke on the ability of elderly and mobility impaired occupants to egress from burning structures. They are one of five teams that received the 2021 Catalyst Grant this Spring.

Congratulations to Alexander DiPaola, who recently graduated from MME, has won an NSERC CGS-M award for his research entitled “Heat Release Rate in Under-Ventilated Compartment Fires” under the supervision of Beth Weckman at the UW Fire Research Labs.

Beth Weckman, an MME professor, was recently awarded the Dougal Drysdale Award for Extraordinary Service to the International Association of Fire Safety Science in organizing the 13th IAFSS Symposium twice. Professor Weckman organized the 2020 symposium in person and this year, 2021, virtually.

Congratulations to Professor Kyle Daun on publishing a new textbook on thermal radiation heat transfer. The textbook is one of the two main textbooks on thermal radiation heat transfer, and they have approximately 50% market share each.

Mechanical engineering students namely, Benjamin Beazley, Collin Bolt, Galen Fernandes, Alexsa Laddaran, Jillian Lee, Rebecca Wong, and Gongyi Zhang received six trophies including second place overall in the Solar Decathlon Build Challenge and first place in the Financial Feasibility & Affordability category. Congratulations to all of our dedicated and talented winners!

Between April 19 – 30th 2021, UWaterloo Fire Research Labs hosted the largest ever and very successful 13th Virtual International Symposium on Fire Safety Science with over 620 attendees from around the globe! The event began with a week of specialty workshops on topics ranging from Human Behaviour in Fire to Li-ion Battery Fires and including Modelling and Simulation of Fires, Compartment and Timber Structure Fires, Wildland Fires and Smart FireFighting Technology.

On March 30th and 31st, MME's 4th-year Capstone Design Symposium events were held virtually and showcased our latest and greatest in terms of talent and innovation. This year, there were over 100+ senior teams showcasing their projects and competing for a selection of awards from best product design, web design, prototype, inovation, presention quality etc. Below are the results and conclusions of this year's award winners.

Congratulations to the winners and to everyone that participated in the event!
