Dr. McKenna has been very active in the optometry profession and has been involved both provincially in PEI and nationally with the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO). In PEI, he has served as President of the PEI Association of Optometrists, is former Registrar and is Past Chairman of the College of Optometry (1985-1990), was PEI Representative of the CAO (1985-1991, 1999-2003), was on the Steering Committee for provincial TPA’s and assisted with the Atlantic Optometric Education Symposium in 2000. On a national level, David was PEI representative to the Canadian Examiners of Optometry and served on the CEO Executive. He was a Trustee of the Canadian Optometric Trust Fund (1988-1991), Chair of the CAO Congress in 1993 and now Co-Chair of the 2009 CAO Congress in PEI. In addition to these many positions, Dr. McKenna is also a TLC Board Member (1995-present) and is Past President of the CNIB Advisory Board, PEI Division. He has also been a host and a mentor to optometry students from the University of Waterloo and has not only shared his knowledge but also his home to some of the students.
David is a very active member of his community of Stratford, PEI, serving as Vice-Chair of the Queens Region Health Board, was a member of the Safety Services and Environment Committee, Town of Stratford (2007-2009) and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation (2007-2009). He participates in local career days, has been a member of the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce for 20 years, is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Assumption Parish and is an active fundraiser for many groups including the United Way, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the UPEI Foundation, Our Lady of Assumption Parish and the CNIB.
In addition to all of Dr. McKenna has a long standing involvement with the Progressive Conservative Party and has held positions such as Poll Chair, Campaign Manager (2 times), was President of the PC Riding Association and President of Fundraising for the PC Island Fund. In 2003 he was elected to the Provincial Legislature and serves as a member of the Treasury Board, as well as the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, the Standing Committee on Social Development and the Standing Committee on the Constitution of Canada. David is Candidate of Record for District 6 Stratford/Kinlock as well as acting as Fundraiser and Consultant for the PC Party both provincially and federally, 2007 - 2009
David enjoys spending time with his family, wife Ann and their three daughters Monica, Emily and Bridget.
