Inspiring the next generation: Ella the Planet Helper
At the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy, sustainability is key to our continued efforts as a School to encourage our Faculty, staff and students to think about our role on our Earth and how we can all create a healthier, more sustainable future.
One of our Green Team members, Precious Bolanta-Owoha has taken that commitment to heart with her children’s book, Ella the Planet Helper. Inspired by her daughters and her own experience with climate anxiety, Precious created the book to introduce sustainability to children in a way that feels positive, approachable and empowering.
My experience of the fundamental truth that People and Planet can prosper at the same time and at the same rate, that it doesn’t have to be one at the expense of the other, is what drives my passion for simplifying environmental education for young readers.
Through Ella’s everyday actions and discoveries, young readers are encouraged to see that caring for the planet doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. Small actions can make a difference, and everyone can play a part.
The book also reflects Precious’s environmental education through her Master of Development Practice studies in Waterloo’s Faculty of Environment and provides a creative example of how members of the School of Pharmacy Green Team are sharing sustainability knowledge with the broader community.
Initiatives like this reflect the Green Team’s goal of building a culture of sustainability at the School of Pharmacy, encouraging our community to take what we learn and practise here and carry it into our homes, families and communities.
Ella the Planet Helper is available through Amazon.
