February of each year is recognized as Black History Month throughout Canada. It’s a time when we, as a community, reflect on the impact of Black community members throughout our 65-year history. This is why we are highlighting the Donald and Doris M’Timkulu Award this month.
Named in honour of the late Donald M’Timkulu (pictured), former Professor and Acting Principal of Renison, and Doris M’Timkulu, a former Board member and long-time friend of Renison, this award is given to full-time Renison students who have demonstrated commitment to voluntary service in an international or multicultural context.
About Dr. Donald M’Timkulu
Dr. M’Timkulu had a lasting impact on Renison. He arrived at Renison in 1969 having already distinguished himself as a scholar of Sociology, and was well known for being generous and kind. During his tenure he stepped into the role of Acting Principal when the unexpected passing of Principal Wyn Rees left the position vacant in 1971. As Principal, Dr. M’Timkulu oversaw the first Renison graduates in 1972, the development of several Renison specializations, and the name change of Applied Social Science to Social Development Studies (as it is still known).
Up to $4,000 for Students
This month, Doris M’Timkulu has generously stepped forward as fund champion to match each donation to this important award, up to a maximum of $2,000 (for a total of $4,000 if we meet our goal!).
That means, every time you donate to the Donald and Doris M’Timkulu Award this February, you'll be turning $1 into $2 - and it all goes to students!
