Visiting Researcher positions are subject to the following policies:
- Visiting Researchers (VR; also sometimes called Visiting Scholars) may only be approved if the VR will be collaborating with an ongoing Renison faculty or staff member in a specific, defined manner. It is expected that a proposal for the collaborative work will be produced for approval ahead of permission to receive the appointment.
- VR applicants would normally hold a completed Ph.D.
- VR applicants who do not already hold Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency should have a full-time institutional affiliation in their home country. Domestic applicants may be between positions, but should have held some recent institutional affiliation (such as a post-doc position completed within a year of the application to Renison).

- Resource considerations include office space, the Employer Compliance Fee ($230 in 2019), time spent on onboarding, etc. Costs such as the Employer Compliance Fee are charged to the sponsoring unit. It is the responsibility of the VR applicant to complete all necessary immigration paperwork and pay for any visa or other necessary fees (other than the Employer Compliance Fee).
- The sponsoring staff/faculty member must belong to the sponsoring unit (such as Culture and Language Studies), and is responsible for assisting with onboarding the VR and working with them during the appointment. The sponsor will provide a one-page report to their Chair/Director on the collaboration’s results within three months of the visiting appointment’s end.
- VR appointments are for no more than one year.
- The decision of whether to accept a VR application rests with the Vice-President of the sponsoring unit, in consultation with the Chair/Director of the sponsoring unit.
