Future students

Reigning supreme for the sixth year in a row, Waterloo's Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) team from the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) won the Canadian Finals in Halifax and secured second place at the Global Finals in North Carolina, defeating some of the best business schools in the world—including Berkeley, Georgetown, Miami University, US Air Force Academy, Trinity College and a close defeat by Dartmout.

This represents a great achievement for both SAF and the student team as their finish is the highest ranking achieved by an international team in the VCIC Global competition's 27-year history.

This year's team—SAF students Ansh, Joel, John, Nolan, Quynh-Anh and Rachel—proudly represented SAF at the competition, their regional win and historic global finish demonstrating SAF students' unparalleled ability to think like top-tier investors in an intense, fast-paced competition that simulates the real-world venture capital process.

In honour of International Women's Day this month, we're highlighting some incredible SAF alumni who are making waves in the finance industry.

Building a strong foundation for success through SAF's co-op program, networking opportunities and development of technical business skills, our featured alumni––Renee Milligan and Lucy Qi––have shown how women can bring unique abilities to the table, reshaping the future of finance to uplift the current and future women in the industry.

Our journey to ACHIEVE 2025

In January, our team of third-year students, Michelle, Madison, Jaiden, and Bonita, had the exciting opportunity to represent the University of Waterloo at the ACHIEVE Case Competition in Toronto!

In January, Gurpartap, Leo, Brishank, and Franco—second-year Accounting and Financial Management students—participated in the Eclipse Case Competition at the University of Toronto.

The competition brought together students from across Ontario to solve business challenges in four streams: Sales Management, ESG Strategy, Technology, and Entrepreneurship. Read on to learn about their experience competing in the Technology stream!

Accounting and Financial Management students Ian, Luka, and Chiranjeev reflect on their experience competing in the Toronto Metropolitan University’s annual Battle on Bay case competition. They secured a second-place position at this three-day event, comprised of various networking events, pitches and socials which concluded with an awards ceremony and gala dinner.

February reminds us to take a moment and slow down to appreciate our loved ones. This Family Day we're celebrating SAF alumni sibling duos who are paving the way together!

Ayman and Ammar Kamran (CFM '23), twin software engineers who took their skills to different cities: Ayman at Bloomberg in NYC, the heart of finance, and Ammar at Securiti.ai at the tech hub of the world, San Jose.

Sisters Puneet, an M&A Analyst at Banyan Software, and Mahek, a soon-to-be consultant at McKinsey, share how their journey at SAF helped them discover their true passions within the accounting and finance industry.

In honour of Black History Month, SAF student Daniella shares her experience as an Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) student at the University of Waterloo. Through dance, leadership, and community building, she has embraced her culture and created spaces for connection—from leading the African Student Association to co-founding an initiative supporting Black students in finance, she’s working to empower the next generation.

Michael’s journey in the Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) program came with challenges, including the lack of Black representation in accounting—but it also sparked a drive to create change! Through mentorship, UWBASE, Blackleaf Capital, and co-founding the Waterloo Black Business Society, he’s building a community that uplifts and empowers Black students.

In November, Arnav, Anmol, Aidan, Joanna, Kabir and Luka, had the opportunity to represent the School of Accounting and Finance and University of Waterloo at the ACIIC Fall Stock Pitch Competition. This competition is an intercollegiate stock pitch competition among 10 of the biggest business programs in Canada including schools like Western University, Queens University and University of British Columbia.

In January, a team of Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) students—Luka (3B), Michael (3B), Arnav (2B), and Jasmine (2B)—achieved a remarkable victory, securing first place at the National Investment Banking Competition (NIBC) in Vancouver. Competing against more than 300 teams from 16 countries, they showcased their exceptional financial skills on the global stage and took home the prestigious $10,000 grand prize.
