Future students

January often brings about change and new beginnings, which is why the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) is highlighting alumni who have made exciting career changes, promoting growth and diversifying their expertise. In pivoting to unique and multidisciplinary fields, their stories demonstrate the flexibility possible with a foundation in accounting and finance.

In the Sustainability and Financial Management (SFM) program, students don't just study sustainability, they practice it.

The SFM program proudly teams up with Sustainable Waterloo Region for an annual tree planting event, bringing together students and staff to help plant micro-forests that enhance biodiversity and inspire environmental stewardship in our local community.

Through this hands-on, collaborative experience, they learn the true value of sustainability from the ground up.

Dr. Adam Presslee explores the challenges of turning creative ideas into workable solutions.

Collaborating with researchers from Xiamen University and Texas Tech University, his recent study examines how teams with different skill sets generate and refine ideas using advanced neuroimaging technology.

November marked a significant milestone in sustainability education as the University of Waterloo hosted the inaugural "Be the Future" conference for high school students, organized by the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF), the Faculty of Environment and Ontario DECA.

This unique event highlighted Waterloo's commitment to developing the next generation of leaders by inspiring students to explore the intersection of sustainability, social impact and economic growth.

Battling it out in Boston

Luka and Josh (AFM students) secured 3rd place at the Boston Stock Pitch Competition, impressing judges with their "buy" recommendation of Pet Valu backed by extensive research. They credit SAF extracurriculars with helping to prepare them for the competition and emphasize the value of learning from peers, alumni, and competition experiences.

For Global Entrepreneurship Week, the University of Waterloo is spotlighting some incredible entrepreneurs making a difference for humanity and our world.

School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) alum Jade Choy (BAFM ’17) co-founded Epoch alongside her brother Keith Choy (BAFM ’16, MAcc ’16) and close friend Michael Miller. Like many of her Accounting and Finance peers at Waterloo, Choy was on a more traditional career path — aiming for a future in management consulting. However, a side project related to non-profit work sparked a much larger idea, one that would eventually evolve into Epoch.
