  1. What airport should I fly in to?
    Guests should make travel arrangements to Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in Costa Rica.
  2. What hotels are near the airport?
    We recommend staying at the Courtyard Marriott San Jose Airport Alajuela or Fairfield Marriott San Jose Airport Alajuela upon your arrival to Juan Santamaria International Airport. The tour will depart from these adjacent hotels the morning of May 11.
  3. Do I need vaccines to travel to Costa Rica?

  4. Where can I find more information about the Soltis Center?

  1. Will I need travel insurance?
    Guests will need to secure their own travel insurance, including cancellation insurance. For advice on what travel insurance you may consider, consult the Government of Canada’s travel insurance website.
  2. What donation to UWaterloo is expected?
    The Faculty of Science recommends a $2500 donation per household. Donations will be used to support future student field experiences abroad through the Global Perspectives of Science (GPS) program in the Faculty of Science.
  3. Can I bring my children?
    The Alumni Adventures Abroad welcomes curious young scientists. The suggested age for this travel program is 14+.
  4. What level of activity/fitness is required?
    Activities include walking, hiking through varied terrain in the rainforest, and exposure to high temperatures and humidity. In May, the average daily temperature is 29°C with seasonal fluctuations likely. There may be intermittent rain as the Costa Rican rainy season begins in mid-May.
  5. Are meals included?
    All meals from lunch on May 11 through to breakfast on May 19 are included.
  6. Is there alcohol available?
    Alcohol will be available for purchase for guests of legal drinking age in Costa Rica (18+) throughout the trip.
  7. Is there internet access?
    Wifi will be available for personal devices at the Soltis Center and at Hotel Costa Verde.
  8. Will there be ‘down time’ to do activities on our own?
    Yes! Although we have daily activities planned, there will be time for you to enjoy Costa Rica and get to know your fellow alumni on the trip! The Soltis Center can help you book additional experiences, let us know what else you would like to do.
  9. What do I pack?
    Guests should plan for average temperatures ranging from 22-29°C with high humidity and the possibility of rain. We suggest you pack the following: rain gear, insect repellent, sunscreen, flashlight, hiking shoes, swimsuit, sandals/flip flops, a variety of clothing including long sleeved shirts, long pants, sunglasses, hat, water bottle, personal insurance, personal ID, original & copy of your passport. Please ensure your passport is valid for 6 months after date of travel!
  10. What’s the connection with Texas A&M University and Soltis Center?
    Texas A&M is a university research partner of the Soltis Center. Our Dean, Chris Houser, is a former faculty member of Texas A&M University and as such, maintains his research privileges and relationships with the Center.
  11. Can I attend only a portion of the trip?
    Our adventures program plans for guests to attend the trip in its entirety. Regretfully, we are unable to accommodate requests for shortened stays.
