The power of community, showcased on Giving Day

by Elizabeth Kleisath, Communications Officer, Advancement

Looking back on university, many of our alumni reflect on memories and friendships that were sparked from late night study sessions, working together to finally figure out the solution to a difficult assignment problem or putting the final touches on a lab report after laughing with each other.  While university can be challenging, having a group of friends and a network of support turns those challenging moments into memories that last a lifetime.

To set students up for success in both their academic studies and their mental health, Waterloo Science is supporting students to help them feel connected, confident and encouraged from their very first day on campus.

Today, on the second annual UWaterloo Giving Day, alumni, donors, faculty, staff and friends of the Faculty of Science have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. We are asking for support towards the new Science Learning Hub, a welcoming space designed to help first-year students navigate the transition to university life, receive academic help and connect with a community of friends. The hub will offer free drop-in tutoring, group study sessions and peer-to-peer support focused on foundational first-year science courses.

For many students, first year can feel overwhelming. Large lectures, demanding coursework and adjusting to life away from home can create challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Having a supportive environment like the Science Learning Hub will create an atmosphere where students can ask questions, meet classmates and receive encouragement from upper-year peers.

The impact of donor support reaches far beyond a single assignment or exam. By supporting the Science Learning Hub today for Waterloo Giving Day, you are helping create the foundation students need to thrive academically, while also supporting their well-being and sense of belonging.

We know that for students, a conversation with a tutor can help rebuild confidence after a difficult midterm. A shared study session can lead to friendships that last throughout a degree and beyond. Small moments of encouragement can help students realize they belong in science and are capable of achieving their goals.

Waterloo Science students are known for their curiosity, collaboration and drive to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. By investing in initiatives like the Science Learning Hub, you are championing these priorities in our students, and creating a culture of care in Science.

Waterloo Giving Day is about coming together as a community to create opportunities that shape the future. Today, we invite you to join with us and make a gift in support of the next generation of scientists. Help us empower students to succeed, redefine possibility and simultaneously, build a foundation for our students to thrive.
