Science educators awarded for teaching excellence
Congratulations to Jen Parks and Josh Neufeld on receiving the 2025 Excellence in Science Teaching Award (ESTA) from the Faculty of Science
Congratulations to Jen Parks and Josh Neufeld on receiving the 2025 Excellence in Science Teaching Award (ESTA) from the Faculty of Science. This award is granted annually to two instructors who have demonstrated excellence in teaching in their undergraduate or graduate courses, as nominated by students, faculty, and staff.
At the Faculty of Science, we are inspired daily by our remarkable educators who go the extra mile to further student learning. Their passion is what makes Science at Waterloo stand out amongst other institutes.
“It is wonderful to recognize Jen and Josh for their important contributions to teaching and learning in the Faculty of Science,” says Rob Hill, Senior Teaching Fellow and professor in the physics and astronomy department. “They are both terrific examples of how taking a student-centred approach to teaching has a major impact on the student experience. This is demonstrated very clearly and consistently in all the student testimonials received during this year’s ESTA nomination process.”

Dr. Jen Parks is an instructor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) and the Associate Dean for Diverse, Inclusive, and Safe Science. Parks is one of the Department’s most outstanding teachers and is also beloved and trusted by the students. From hands-on labs to multiple field course/trip experiences, Parks is passionate about the importance of experiential learning. She has been active in developing innovative teaching practices and assessments for experiential learning, too. Her pedagogical innovations with virtual field learning experiences and her efforts to build relationships with the Indigenous community in the EARTH 390 field sites have been shared through conference presentations and posters.
Parks plays an important role in recruitment and participates in student life activities. When asked about their favourite experiences as undergraduate students, our alumni often talk about Parks in their answers. She stands out from all other instructors because of the meaningful relationships she builds, the unwavering support she provides students, and her endless passion for teaching and learning.
“I am very honoured to receive this award, particularly knowing that my nomination was supported by letters from our undergraduate students. Our students in Earth and Environmental Sciences and Geological Engineering are exceptional, and I feel very lucky to teach them in lectures, labs, and in the field.”

Dr. Josh Neufeld is an exceptional teacher who brings energy and creativity to every lecture, transforming each class into an inspiring and interactive experience. Through engaging skits and demonstrations, Neufeld makes complex microbiology concepts clear and brings excitement to the classroom. As a recipient of multiple teaching awards, he has a proven record of inspiring and motivating learning in both large in-person and virtual settings. Neufeld skillfully connects classroom material to real-world events and practical applications, highlighting the relevance and significance of each topic. His adept use of classroom technologies allows for real-time engagement and helps students solidify their understanding. He makes every effort to share his passion for the microbial world and demonstrates genuine care for students and their success.
"Teaching is the most impactful way I can share my passion for microbiology. My goal is to engage students in unexpected ways, surprising them with creative approaches that bring microbial concepts to life. Through demonstrations and reenactments, grounded in empathy and humour, I aim to shift expectations of what can and should happen in a classroom. Experimenting with new ways to connect students with course material is what makes teaching so rewarding for me as a scientist. As a result, it is difficult to fully express how grateful I am for this teaching award, which reassures me that I am heading in the right direction."
- Josh Neufeld, Professor
