Science welcomes 2025 Schulich Leader Scholar

The Faculty of Science is pleased to welcome Schulich Leader Scholar Dorathy Shen to the University of Waterloo. The Schulich Leader Scholarship is one of Canada’s most prestigious undergraduate awards, given annually to only 100 high school students nationwide. It recognizes entrepreneurial-minded graduates pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) programs at select Canadian universities.

Shen’s enthusiasm for applied scientific research was evident during high school, when she developed an affordable, eco-friendly modular wind turbine concept during the SHAD summer program, which sparked her interest in using science to create solutions that can help move humanity forward.

Eager to take her passion for science to the next level, Shen has begun her first year in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo.

“I chose Waterloo because it offers one of the strongest astrophysics programs in the country,” she says. “I was also drawn to the co-op program, which will allow me to gain meaningful experience and prepare me to push the boundaries of science.”

Beyond academics, Shen looks forward to joining sports teams, attending campus events, and being part of a vibrant campus community as she works toward becoming an astrophysicist and exploring the universe's unanswered questions.
