Waterloo scientists awarded millions to support Canada’s National Quantum Strategy

Canada is a global leader in quantum science. Waterloo scientists are harnessing the potential of this disruptive science to create secure quantum communication and expand quantum computing with new funding from the NSERC Quantum Alliance grants.

Last week, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced an investment of close to $51 million as part of a national investment to support quantum research. The funding will support quantum research, foster national and international collaborations and strengthen quantum talent in Canada.

Three Waterloo scientists were among the NSERC Quantum Alliance grant recipients.

Dr. Thomas Jennewein, an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, received $5 million in funding through the Alliance Consortia Quantum Grants. The project will focus on research into quantum networks and quantum communications via satellite.

Dr. Jonathan Baugh (Department of Chemistry) and Dr. Adrian Lupascu (Department of Physics and Astronomy) each received $25,000 through the Alliance International Quantum funding program. Baugh’s project will focus on improved scalability of silicon quantum computing with ambipolar devices, and Lupascu’s project will research Quantum Information processing with multilevel systems.

The Government of Canada launched the National Quantum Strategy (NQS) earlier this year to amplify Canada’s significant strengths in quantum research; grow its quantum-ready technologies, companies and talent and solidify Canada’s global leadership in this area.
