Grace DelMistro - Biochemistry

Science Ambassador

Program: Biochemistry

Year: 5

Stream of study: Co-op

Pronouns: She/Her

Career goal: I'm looking into pursuing a future in academia by getting a Master's and PhD in enzymology! My main goal is to apply my knowledge in a research setting such as SickKids!

How I get involved: I've been part of the executive team for the Biochemistry Student Association (BSA) as well as UW Crafts 4 Charity! I loved being part of these teams because it got me connected to not only the biochemistry/science majors, but the greater UW community through fun events. I've also been involved in the Let's Talk Science program where I got to show younger students in elementary and high school how interesting and exciting science can be! Lastly, I've been a 2nd year biochemistry lab TA for a couple terms and it was so rewarding to help students in the lab and gain leadership skills through teaching them the experiments.

Why I love my program

I love being in biochemistry because it gives me a unique perspective on the intersection between chemistry and biology. In my chemistry courses, I can utilize my knowledge from my biology courses and vice-versa. My lab skills have also improved due to the different etiquettes and techniques I get from both parts of my program. Lastly, I love how close everyone in my program is and the supportive community we've built through being in the same classes for nearly 5 years!

Why University of Waterloo?

I chose UW because of it's co-op program and all the potential it has for me to figure out my future career. Without co-op, I wouldn't have gained the skills for job interviews in my field. It also gave me relevant research experience that solidified my love for biochemistry!
